To talk about the origins of Yakult, we need to take a step back in time to Japan in 1899, the year Minoru Shirota was born a scientist, microbiologist, and the founder of Yakult.

Our mission is to inspire happiness and wellbeing for all. After all – who wouldn’t want that? This dream was born out of our founder’s belief that prevention of illness is better than cure, and that gut health is key to wellbeing.
Our Research Mission
We live and breathe research. Right now, hundreds of Yakult researchers are investigating how L. casei Shirota, and in the context of microbiology, can contribute even more to the world. If our bacteria can reach our intestines alive, what other amazing things can they do? Every single day, we gain new knowledge from our wonderful teams in Japan and Belgium.
How is Yakult produced?
Our mission is to help create a happier world through bacteria – one little bottle at a time. Back in 1935, Yakult bottles were made of glass, filled by hand, and topped with a cork stopper.
