Daylight saving time: the healthy habits to get used to

On The night between Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March the clocks moves one hour forward: daylight saving time comes into effect.

There are many advantages to this: first of all, the energy saving, which was the fundamental reason behind the change in the hour. Furthermore, a longer day also means that we get to enjoy longer days during pleasant spring weather. .

More daylight hours in the evening means  a decreased need to   consume energy to light houses and streets,  it also gives us more time after work to do activities we enjoy, such as a walk in the park, meeting friends, or organizing an outdoor family dinner .

Its these Little things that help us relieve the stress of work and, at the same time, give us some more satisfaction at the end of the day.

At the same time, the change of hour may , result in  a small inconvenience for our body: the effects are often associated with those of jet lag caused by a flight toward the east, such as difficulty getting to sleep and feeling of fatigue during waking hours.

So, what can we do to safeguard our wellbeing in these days of change and be able to enjoy the long days of spring?

Here is some advice to take, from the Saturday before the change of hour  to the Monday after:

On the Saturday before:

Set the alarm clock half an hour early.

Try to arrange your appointments in the first part of the day, so you can have an afternoon free from the stress of the “duties”.

Treat yourself to a relaxing evening and go to sleep a little earlier than usual.

On Sunday:

Get up when the alarm clock goes off: do not take advantage of the fact that it is Sunday to pretend that the time has not changed – you will regret the next day when you have to get up to go to work!

Avoid naps during the day: go for a slow pace, unhurriedly but without “sleep break”.

Spend time outdoors as much as possible: the light will keep your senses active and will help to set your circadian rhythms.

On the Monday after:

Definitely the toughest day, but you have good reasons to think positively – from tomorrow everything will be easier and, after all, the effort expended today is for a very good reason: we are officially in spring!

Today it is absolutely essential to have a very good breakfast: resist temptation to breakfast in a hurry or – worse – to skip it to make up for time lost for the daylight saving.

They will be the best 15 minutes invested throughout the day: not only will we give our body the necessary energy for a good start in this day but, above all, we will give a clear signal to set on the new schedule: it’s time, we are ready, we will start!
