In 1930, Minoru Shirota succeeded in isolating the lactic acid bacteria that he was studying for many years, then he selected the strongest strain and cultivated it until he got lactic acid bacteria robust enough to resist gastric juice and reach the gut alive. In his honor, these bacteria were named Lactobacillus casei Shirota.
